Movies for Wine Lovers

Movies for Wine Lovers

There’s a movie for everyone, including those who like to partake in the luxuries of the fermented grape. Here are some movies which require that you sip some wine as you watch.
Sideways: Sideways is all about drinking, in part. It’s an American comedy that invites you to get drunk with the lead characters as they make their way through Santa Ynez’s wine country. There’s plenty of drinking, loving and the messy hang overs that occur when those things collide. Watch this critically acclaimed flick with a glass of Pinot Noir in hand, on your flat screen HD TV.
The Talented Mr. Ripley: This isn’t a film about wine, per se, but it is set in a decadent Italy, with lots of water, fabulously rich and beautiful people and gorgeous scenery. The movie stars lookers like Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. It’s got crime and intrigue. Filmed by Anthony Minghella, the cinematography is exquisite, it demands to be watched in high definition. Try a glass of Vigna del Vassalo to get you in the right frame of mind for this flick.
Amarcord: Fellini is a cinematic legend and you can see why in Amarcord. This is a delightful, haunting look at childhood, memory and old Italy. The title of the movie translates to I remember—it’s a semi autobiographical bildungsroman, a poignant coming of age tale. As such it calls for a glassful of a fizzy Lambrusco. Watch the remastered version in HD.
Summertime: Starring Katherine Hepburn, this movie as a school teacher who goes to Venice. She encounters an Italian street kid named Mauro on her first night there; he becomes her unofficial tour guide and escort as she makes her way down the narrow Venetian streets. Hepburn sports a green frock in the film, which becomes a sort of emblem. The movie is a look at love, loneliness and romance. The amazing Venetian backdrop will inspire you to drink Amarone, a structured red that will leave you hankering for more.
Passione D’amore: This film, directed by acclaimed Italian auteur Ettore Scola takes place in 1862, at the height of Romanticism. In between wars, a captain falls in love with the wife of a rich, older man. Their affair is perfect for a fleeting and very brief period. Scola’s film is witty as it is handsome and sumptuous. While enjoying this classic, one should partake in an earthy Piedmonte red wine.
Dr. No: James Bond movies may inspire you to drink martinis but Dr. No has Bond killing with a bottle of Champagne, a 1955 Dom Perignon actually.
Silence of the Lambs: “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” A nice Chianti, indeed. What more is there to say? Watch and get chills down your spine as Dr. Hannibal Lector waxes lyrical about some of his favorite eats. Try not to drink Chianti as you watch this movie in HD on a rainy night.
Bottle Shock: This movie is about wine tasting. It makes it look like a high adrenaline sport. Interesting stuff, even though it didn’t do too well at the box office. This one’s for real oenophiles.
Catch all these great movies on satellite TV.
