Shell Oil Company

Based in the Unites States, Shell Oil Company is affiliated to both Royal Dutch Shell and the global Shell Group of companies and focuses on providing affordable, socially and environmentally friendly sources of energy to the consumer market.

The Shell saga, begun in 1833 by Marcus Samuel in a small antique shop in East End London, when that enterprising gentleman decided to expand his business to include the then extremely popular oriental shells, has now expanded and morphed into a conglomerate of impressive proportions.

Starting out as the Shell Transport and Trading Company in 1897, the company merged with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in 1907, and the Shell Oil Company was subsequently established in the United States in 1912 by the Royal Dutch /Shell Group.

A mussel shell, introduced as the first company logo in 1901, was changed to a scallop shell /Pecten in 1904, and underwent several changes before settling on its present design which was created by the renowned designer Raymond Leowy in 1971.

The now famous colours of red and yellow were chosen by the first Shell Company set up in California, in 1915, due to the state’s strong Spanish connections - the colours of Spain being Red and Yellow.

Shell Oil Company operations currently span 49 US states and employ over 22,000 employees in approximately 13,000 Shell banded gas stations spread across the country.

Shell Oil Company is also a joint partner in Motiva Enterprises in the gulf coast, and has 50% ownership of Motiva’s three refineries, which produce a daily average of 865,000 barrels of oil. The high viscosity index base oil plant owned by Motiva produces 22,500 barrels of oil per day. Motiva also refines and markets branded products throughout the eastern and southern United States.

According to a study carried out by Lundberg Survey, Inc. Shell Oil Company and Motiva serve an estimated six million customers a day and sell an average of 19 billion gallons of gasoline per year.

Shell Oil Products US, also a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company, is one of the foremost leaders in the refining, transportation and marketing of fuels and has a total of four refineries of its own based in Deer Park, Texas; Anacortes, Washington; Los Angeles and Martinez, California.
