Mattress Buying Checklist For First Time Buyers
By John Warraich

Yes there are more than a dozen mattress selling stores claiming they have the BEST mattress and there is no reason to doubt what they say for a second. After all, it comes with a 20 year warranty, the perfect spring box, multi-layered, adjustable and some even come with a free pillow or gift hamper. But what do you do when every mattress out there is the "best"? You choose the one that is best for you.

Mattresses are designed for different needs. Every best mattress is made to suit different people. The key is to find the mattress that is best for you. Following are some of the checks that Mattress Queen team has come up with after some primary research and collecting reviews from purchasers, sleep experts and mattress salesmen.

-Mattress buying Check I: It might be your first time buying a mattress. But you can use the experience the first time you bought a car, or just a simple pen.

This is as simple as buying a new pen. First thing you do before buying a pen is you try it by writing a few words on some scrap paper; you need to do the same with the mattress you think looks comfy. Try lying down with different positions on the mattress before you buy it. And do not feel ashamed to try it out specifically lying on it the way you usually sleep. Repeat the same with different mattresses till you find your "best" queen sized mattress.

As with cars, it's highly recommended that you take any mattress for a "test drive" before you purchase it. No, that doesn't mean you have to spend the night in the mattress store, but don't be afraid to spend fifteen minutes lounging on a mattress you think you might want to take home.

- Mattress buying Check II: Firmer is better. NOT always.

Firmer mattresses are usually the most popular mattresses, but that doesn't mean they're better at preventing back pain. A mattress that's too soft can also cause back or spinal problems. It is not recommended to buy a mattress based just on the fact that it is too firm or too soft.

- Mattress buying Check III: Higher coil counts are better. Are they?

When you talk to a mattress salesperson, they'll probably tell you that a higher coil count will result in better sleep and a more durable mattress. But keep in mind that some mattresses offer more coils but use thinner wire, and others with thicker wire and fewer coils. That doesn't mean you should just throw your hands up and sleep on the floor. Just don't spend more than you intended to if you can't physically feel a difference.

The author, John W, is a retired mattress store manager who has years of experience dealing with clients and is well-versed in the problems they face. He spends most of the time educating, guiding and helping people in picking the mattress that would best suit them.
