How Massage Chairs Have Evolved Through the Years

A chair massage is viewed as more of method of providing physical relaxation than as a form of medical treatment. The development and progression of the massage chair has been a noteworthy journey.

Also referred to as seated massage, the chair massage has been used for hundreds of years. There are many old Japanese prints that demonstrate individuals receiving a massage while sitting on a stool. In 1982, a man by the name of David Palmer became the Director of the Amma Institute of Traditional Japanese Massage. He concluded that many people might find traditional table massage awkward because of the personal closeness associated with the method. Also, the cost of this type of massage may have been too costly for many people. Palmer set to work on developing a less intimate and cheaper method of massage. In 1986, he presented The High Touch Massage Chair which was manufactured by Living Earth Crafts. Hence, the original massage chair was born.

David Palmer's High Touch Massage Chair was a portable chair that could easily be transported to the requested location. It had a handle, carrying strap, and could fold up for easy transporting. In 1986, the production of a massage chair that was designed to be easily transported and set up at businesses began to be manufactured. This chair was a big hit with masseuses and consumers and they are now sold worldwide.

In 1993, Cary Cruea of Seattle Washington invented The Massage Bar. This is a chair that uses a separate desktop face cradle attached to the countertop. In 1999, John Fanuzzi, along with Golden Ratio Woodworks, went one step further and enhanced the massage chair by utilizing high-tech tubing, vinyl, and simple chair set-up and dismantling. The chairs contain many features permitting a variety of adjustments.

Today's massage chairs are much more advanced then when first developed. There are more options to make more face cradle adjustments. Plastics and metals are used instead of wooden materials. Padding is improved to allow for more comfort and relaxation. The chairs contain comfortable rests areas for not only the face, but also for the arms and buttocks. You can also find massage chairs with wheels. They are safe, durable, reliable, and tailored to meet every clients' needs. The portability and ease of set up and dismantle make these massage chairs very popular.

Thanks to technological innovation, today's massage chairs are ergonomically designed to satisfy each client's requirements. They are also designed to target the body's trigger points which help release much needed pain relieving endorphins.
