Introduction to Flair Bartending
By Shane Dayton
Flair bartending is an increasingly common practice by bartenders who are not only trained to mix and serve drinks, but also perform in flair contests that showcase a wide variety of skills and showmanship. These performances are increasing in popularity as the juggling, flipping, pouring, and other movements make for some extremely impressive choreographed acts. There are even some competitions for tandem bartending where a pair of flair bartenders work together as one act.
There are actually two times of flair bartending: working flair and show flair. Working flair involves teaching the efficiency of movement, and being able to use two hands in conjunction to quickly serve as many people as possible in a very short time.
Show flair is what most people think about when they think about bartending flair. This involves the tossing and juggling of bottles, the pouring of multiple drinks at once, and all the other showboating and choreographed moves that make this such an entertaining and popular skill.
While flair bartending has definitely taken off to entirely new levels over the last twenty years, some form of this flashy style of tending bar has existed for over 150 years according to the Flair Bartender's Association (FBA).
Both styles of flair bartending have their uses, and while working flair might not be flashy, it's very practical and gives bartenders the skills to be able to handle even the largest of rushes. Show flair can be very lucrative as there are many competitions that involve major cash prices. A few good tricks also tends to help out the tips on a normal night.
Because of all these reasons, as well as a general growing interest, flair bartending is sure to remain popular for years to come.
