How Much Can a Bartender Make?
By Ray Sherman
People often ask "How much money can a bartender make?" It is a job position many folks are curious about. A good bartender in a busy upscale establishment can easily make $60,000 - $100,000 per year. On the opposite end of the scale a bartender at a busy dive can still earn $12,000 - $15,000 per year. And in the middle, or your average pay for a bartender, is probably around $25,000-$50,000 per year. Since the vast majority of bartending income is from tips earnings vary depending on how well (or not) one interacts with people.
To earn the top end of these figures as a bartender you need to work full time for sure. However, one of the benefits of bartending is that you can work part time and still make full time income in comparison to most jobs. Imagine how nice it would be to work your regular job and maybe bartend at the bowling alley 2 nights a week making great money. During the bowling season you can easily make $75-$100 in tips each night. Quite a nice little addition to your full time income with few hours compared to taking a part time job for minimum wage. And these part time opportunities are many in this field. Lots of establishments that serve liquor need part time help.
An established bartender can also earn a great side income from private parties and weddings. Just how much you can earn from these events depends on your experience and how far you take it. It is not uncommon for a bartender to make $200 for 4 or 5 hours work at a small (100-150 people) wedding at the local firehall. Much more can be made at more lavish events. These jobs are usually gotten by word of mouth and once you've done your first one the others will follow fast.
So how much a bartender can make is pretty much at the discretion of you. It's a great job opportunity for the right person. Almost always the pay per hour is far above minimum wage so it's a matter of how much time you want to put into this to determine how much you will make.
