Involving Kids in the Design Process

Involving Kids in the Design Process
By J Richardson

If you have youngsters in your home, you know how much they love to feel like they're a part of big projects around the house. Although not all rooms can be totally kid friendly, there are a few rooms in the house in which parents can let the kids help. If you've recently moved or are looking for a great way to update the look of your child's room or play room, involving kids in the new design process is a great way to get them interested and supply them with fun, hands-on projects.

If there is anywhere in the house that a kid should be able to feel right at home, it's their own bedroom or play room. With kids' tastes always changing, it's silly to spend hundreds of dollars on art work for a child's room that may become "too babyish" for them in just a year or so. Instead of searching endlessly for the perfect accent pieces - let your kids create them themselves. Stopping by any local art store will be more than enough to inexpensively supply you with everything you need to allow your child to create their own artwork. Sturdy canvas boards and brightly colored paints can be combined by children of any age to create fun artwork for their room. Not only will your child feel great about having something they made themselves in their room - parents will be provided with timeless pieces of artwork created by their children to cherish for years to come.

Another great way to let your children express themselves in their own personal spaces is to install white boards, chalk boards, or bulletin boards for them to customize themselves. Kids will love the idea of being able to create and recreate over and over again, and these types of surfaces give them that exact opportunity. Parents can also get in on the action by writing encouraging and fun messages to their children on their boards. Good grades, report cards, and awards can be displayed on the bulletin board reminding children to keep up the good work and continue to work hard in school. By placing these small reminders in kid-friendly places, they'll receive encouragement on a daily basis.

If you're looking to make a big change in a child's room or playroom and you're able to take on a larger scale project - painting an entire wall with chalkboard paint is a great idea for kids of any age. Chalkboard paint allows a regular wall to transform into a giant chalkboard, so kids can decorate their room however they'd like and have the freedom to change it the very next day. If you have younger kids and drawing on the walls has become an issue - giving them a designated area to practice this will help it from happening on other walls in your home.

So whether your kids are still very young or are growing faster by the second - involving them in deciding how their room will look will be an exciting and fun experience for them. Kids of any age like to feel included, and being able to give them that opportunity is something parents should take full advantage of. Although you can't promise to let them pick out the next furniture set for the living room, giving them the freedom to be creative where appropriate will not only give them the excitement of taking part in the design process, but will build their creativity skills for the future.
