Rag Rugs

In the early years of America’s history the settlers lived in log cabins. These cabins were for the most part functional. You could still find lots of cracks and crevices where the cold air would seep into the home. To correct this situation the women and girls in the family would make rag rugs. These rugs were quite simply made from the various rags that were in their possession.

Since the cloth that was used was varied the rag rugs were colorful and warm. They also had the added advantage of being inexpensive as only the cloth and fabric that was not needed was taken for the creation of these rag rugs. Today we no longer live in log cabins but we still need items that will make our homes look beautiful and provide a sense of warmth in our living spaces.

For this reason you can still find rag rugs being used. Many of these rag rugs are professionally made by carpet and rugs companies to meet the ever growing demand for rugs that are functional and yet beautiful. There are still other people who want to have rag rugs in their homes because these rugs echo with the history of our past and they show the resilience of human nature.

Besides these reasons many people like rag rugs because that are easy to maintain and clean. As they are generally of a small size you can usually machine wash these rag rugs at home without any need for expensive carpet or rug cleaning products. The other benefits of buying rag rugs is that you can afford these rugs as many of them are not that expensive.

There is another way that you can have rag rugs in your home without having to buy them. This is by following in the footsteps of the pioneers who made their own rag rugs. Since many of the techniques and methods that are used in rag rugs have not changed much you can easily make your own rag rugs. The only equipment that you will need is that of the fabric for your rag rug, a crochet hook for rag rugs or a sewing machine.

Once you have all of these items you will need to get your “rags” readied for being shaped into a rug. The sewing machine or crochet hook will help you to bind the separate sections together. You can use rag rug making books or internet sites to guide you on your adventure in rug making. With these tools at your disposal you will soon have interesting rag rugs ready to be placed in your home.
